STUDENTS OF COLOUR COMMITTEE
The Students of Colour Collective is new to the Capilano Students Union. We are coming into our second year of existence with a little more experience and the same drive and passion to bring the causes and concerns of students of colour to the forefront at Capilano University. We recognize the issues people of colour face in this society and we will continue to not only raise the awareness of those issues on campus but more importantly fight against the oppression of people of colour. We are continuously growing and we are always looking for more people to get involved.
Stop Violence Against Indigenous Women
This campaign was co-formed with the First Nations collective, the Social Justice Committee and Women's collective to address the issues facing indigenous women, specifically looking at the stolen sisters campaign. The Students of Colour collective felt that this was an important campaign that they too should be apart of. The focus was to launch the CFS “Stop Violence Against Indigenous Women” postcard campaign through a series of speaker and workshop events.
Islamophobia
The Islamophobia campaign was initiated by the Canadian Federation of Students to highlight the bigotry directed to the Muslim community of Canada. The last few years have seen increased incidents of intolerance on college and university campuses. This awareness campaign seeks to not only educate but to increase unity while respecting the diversity of the student community.
Black History Month
Canadian society hardly recognizes this national event and we in the Student of Colour collective have taken on the responsibility of informing students here at Capilano University of the long history of African diasporas in Canada. From Slavery in Canada and Africville to the continued oppression directed towards to the greater African community.
