UNIVERSITY SENATE
The Senate is comprised of ten elected faculty members, four elected students, two elected support staff members, and four administrators appointed by the president. The University President sits on the Senate without vote. The four student representatives on Senate, who represent the membership of the Capilano Students’ Union, are elected in the fall and spring semester. Of the four student representatives, two are elected from Career, Vocational, Adult Basic Education or English as a Second Language Programs and two are elected from Academic Studies/University Transfer. Student representatives on Senate also work with the CapilanoStudents' Union University Relations Committee and Educational Issues Committee in order to increase the involvement of members in the decision-making process.
Students on Senate have successfully fought to remove fees charged for grade appeals, have changed the University’s definition of “full time status” and the definition of “in good standing.” These changes, although invisible to most students on campus, have had a positive impact onstudents lives when they are applying for aid, appealing a grade or struggling with poor grades and academic status.
Student reps to Senate have also played a role in shaping the content of every course outline you see. Maybe the class used to have way too heavy a workload, maybe the course used to have too heavy an emphasis on participation... or not enough. The point is this is where students get to have a say about what our education looks like.
If you have feedback for your student representatives about something you think should be different about your classes and the way they are offered, come down to the CSU or send your Senate representatives an e-mail.
